Concept

Bayt al-Noor (House of Light) is a permanent communal structure at the Borderland site in Alversjö, Sweden. It’s designed as a cozy lounge where Borderlings can gather, relax, and share quiet moments together under a canopy of light.

The design draws from the Moorish architecture of the Alhambra, especially its intricate muqarnas vaulting. Beneath the layered geometry, 800 meters of programmable LEDs bring the patterns to life, washing the space in shifting color and light.

Though the forms appear fluid and complex, every panel is single-curved Cor-Ten steel, making it possible to unroll the geometry onto flat sheets for laser cutting and fabrication. Built to last, the structure is designed to withstand years of Swedish weather while aging gracefully.

Bayt al-Noor was funded by Fund 33, which supports large-scale or permanent works at the Borderland. Over 80 volunteers from 24 countries came together to bring this vision into reality, and their effort is woven into every part of the structure.
